One of the world's largest festivals is mere weeks away and the hype is heating up – so if you're a dedicated music fan, why not catch a plane to California for Coachella?

Use our guide to make the most of this incredible festival of music, food, sustainability and crafts when you head to this sunny state:

When is it?

This year, the festival is to be held over two weekends – beginning on Friday April 11 to Sunday April 13, and finishing with a finale weekend from April 18 to 20.

Where is it and how do you get there?

The festival is to be held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. It's around two hours from Los Angeles CBD, but shuttles operate between the city and the event. Otherwise, you can choose plenty of other modes of transport, including taxi, bus, train or even limo – it's all part of the adventure!

What about accommodation?

For those who want to stay right in the thick of it, on-site camping is the best option. Festival-goers are able to camp on the lush grounds of the polo club, directly across from the performance area. Don't think you'll be roughing it – there are free showers, wifi, a farmers market, cellphone charging and entertainment! You also have the option of camping off-site at nearby country clubs and resorts. If you're after a little more luxury, you can't go wrong with a hotel. There are many in the area – how about the Indian Palms Country Club and Resort?

Who is playing?

You're in for a treat with the guest list this year. Coachella has a history of a line-up studded with stars and musical legends, and you can expect no different in 2014. Performers include seasoned professionals of the likes of Fatboy Slim, the Pet Shop Boys, Empire of the Sun and Mogwai, as well as new kids on the block Lorde and Flume.

There's something to satisfy every type of music fiend. From the sweet crooning of Ellie Goulding and Lana del Ray, to hip hop sounds of ASAP Ferg, Chance the Rapper and Aloe Blacc, to electronic masters Calvin Harris, Duck Sauce and Martin Garrix, there's an artist to delight every festival goer.

What should I bring?

There are a few Coachella essentials that every festival goer needs, and number one is a wristband! Your wristband is your ticket to the parking, camping and festival areas – so remember to keep it on you at all times. Wristbands that are tampered with or taken off are void.

On top of this, you'll need a pair of dancing shoes, sunblock, a hat, comfortable clothes, a camera and an open mind!
