When you think of romantic places in Europe, Paris is usually one of the first destinations that springs to mind. However, there are many other cities that offer up a wonderful dose of romance around the continent.

Here are four destinations perfect to visit with that special somebody.

Florence, Italy

There’s romance around every corner in Florence, with its charming streets, beautiful buildings and relaxed atmosphere. With stunning architectural marvels such as the Duomo Cathedral and Ponte Vecchio bridge that crosses the tranquil Arno river, it’s everything star-crossed lovers could dream of.

Take a pleasant stroll through the Boboli Gardens with its lovely terraced landscape, statues and fountains and browse some of the world’s most evocative artworks at the Uffizi Gallery for a taste of this city’s enchanting atmosphere.

Don’t miss out on getting stunning panoramic city views from the top of the Duomo. While you’ll need to walk up more than 400 steps, the view of Florence’s peach-tiled rooftops is sure to take your breath away.

Prague, Czech Republic

When you and your loved one first look upon Prague, you’re sure to be bewitched, with this city resembling a medieval, fairy tale destination.

Prague Castle conjures up images of kings, queens and dramatic love stories from days gone by, dating back to the 9th century. It’s the largest castle complex in the world, so why not explore some of its highlights such as the courtyard, gardens, Basilica of St George, St. Wenceslas vineyard and towers?

Don’t stop there in your explorations of Prague. Wander the old, stoney Charles Bridge with your loved one and take in its statues, city and river views. For an extra special view, stroll across at after the sun goes down and watch the night lights illuminate the gorgeous Gothic-style structures across the city.

Venice, Italy

There’s nothing like a boat ride through Venice’s beguiling, twisting and turning canals to cement a couple’s love, which is why Venice is one of the most romantic cities across Europe.

From enjoying a coffee in St Mark’s Square and marvelling at the glittering gold interior of St Mark’s Basilica to taking sweet couples’ photos on the Rialto Bridge, there’s plenty to keep lovers feeling giddy.

Browse some of the souvenir shops together, take a boat trip to an atmospheric surrounding island such as the glassblowing hub of Murano and see a show at the captivating and world-renowned Fenice Theatre.

For an extra unique experience, visit during the Venice Carnival period in February and March, when the city is brimming with street artists, masquerade, feasts, music and other performances.

Lisbon, Portugal 

Head to the sun-drenched paradise of Portugal and venture to the picturesque city of Lisbon. From strolling the banks of the River Tagus to relaxing beachside, there’s so much to love about this destination.

Just walking through the streets of the city’s Historical Centre is an experience, with a range of heritage sites such as the breathtaking Convent and Church of Carmo and the church and monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora. Head slightly out of central Lisbon to the World Heritage-listed town of Sintra and delight with one another over the colourful National Palace, Moors Castle and Pena Palace.

Make sure you also savour some of Lisbon’s mouthwatering culinary delights. Pasteis de Belem, or cream cakes, are Lisbon’s specialty, and they go perfectly with a hot cup of coffee after a leisurely sleep in at this sunny, seductive city. Get a taste for this sweet treat at the factory along Rua de Belem.

You don’t need an excuse to head on a romantic holiday to one of these dreamy destinations, all you need to do is let yourself get swept off your feet.
