Pre-existing Medical Conditions Travel Insurance

Preexisting travel insurance

Medical claims abroad are one of the biggest costs for insurance companies. This is why people who have a higher risk of claiming are forced to pay higher premiums.

If you're one of the people who fall into this category, you'll be aware of just how difficult it is to find travel insurance at an affordable price.

What are pre-existing medical conditions?

Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions provides additional cover for conditions such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis

Standard travel insurance policies do not cover pre-existing medical conditions, putting you at risk if something should happen on your trip.

If you do not disclosure your pre-existing medical condition to your insurer and something happens while abroad, you won't be able to make a claim. Instead, you'll have to fit the bill for your medical costs in a foreign country which can quickly end up costing thousands of dollars.

Good to Know

Why You Need To Have a Medical Screening

Before you receive a quote for your travel insurance policy, you'll be asked a number of in-depth questions about your medical condition. While it can be frustrating, it's important to give as much information as possible to make sure the policy is tailored to your needs.

Disclosing Information About Your Health

It can be tempting to withhold information about your health to reduce the cost of your travel insurance policy. But if something happens while you're abroad and you submit a claim, your insurance company can access your medical records. If they find out you haven't disclosed all your pre-existing medical conditions, they can refuse to payout your claim, and you'll have to foot the bill.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing medical condition unless you've had complications. If you are expecting a child, check the policy to see what it covers up to the 25th week of pregnancy and if you can get an extension from the 26th to 30th week.

Mental Health

If you have a mental illness such as depression or anxiety, it might be covered as a pre-existing condition. It's usually subject to the insurers medical screening process and an additional premium.

Buy Your Travel Insurance As Soon As Possible

It's never a good idea to wait until last minute to buy travel insurance. This is because something might happen before you leave for your trip. If your condition gets worse and you can no longer go, you can submit a claim. You'll be reimbursed, and you can use that money to fund your next holiday once you're feeling better.

Compare Single Trip and Annual Trip Policies

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it usually works out cheaper to buy a single trip policy if you don't travel that often. However, if you travel throughout the year, an annual plan can work out cheaper in the long run. Make sure you get quotes for both policies so you can compare which option will be the most cost-effective.
