The iconic canals that cross the city are perfect for lazy gondola rides, while a plethora of tours enabling visitors to see the best of the city’s attractions from the tranquillity of the water. To see the city from above, travellers should head to the Campanile. Originally built between 888 and 912, the Campanile is the tallest building in the city.

Being an Italian city, there are countless places to enjoy a fantastic bite to eat. There are a wide array of restaurants scattered throughout the city that offer a taste of Venice’s cuisine, catering to a variety of budgets. Foodies should check out the 700-year old Rialto market for a great selection of fresh seafood and local produce.

Getting around

 It’s easy to get around Venice on foot through the narrow alleyways that connect the city. Venice is made up of 118 islands joined together by many beautiful bridges, so be prepared to walk on a variety of terrains. It’s easy to get lost in the city’s tapered streets, but if you follow the signs to the main landmarks you should be able to find your way again easily. Gondola rides offer an amazing experience and a chance to explore the narrower canals for a higher price. The Vaporetto service is the cheapest, most convenient way to get around Venice. Water Taxi services are also a great way to see the city but they can be expensive, so it might be a good idea to share with other travellers.

The best time to visit Venice is during the autumn months of September to November as the city empties out after the busy summer season. The temperatures drop off slightly, averaging between 10 and 23 degrees, but the hotel rates are lower and there is more opportunity to enjoy the city’s famous waterways undisturbed. The period between March and May is also a good time to visit Venice, as temperatures rise and the city begins to thaw out after the winter months.

Located around 13 kilometres from the city centre, Venice Marco Polo Airport is the main international airport serving Venice. It is the fifth busiest airport in Italy. Flights travel to Venice Marco Polo Airport from a number of destinations, including London, Amsterdam, Abu Dhabi and Barcelona. There are no direct flights available from Australia.
