Things to do in Vancouver
Stanley Park is located just north of Downtown Vancouver and is a big change of pace from the city. The park is huge and peaceful, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely walk or an afternoon picnic. Stanley Park is full of trees and surrounded on three sides by Vancouver Harbour. It offers some of the best views of the skyline, harbour, and mountains in the city.
Gastown is the oldest neighbourhood in Vancouver. Its cobblestone streets, pretty Victorian houses, and old-fashioned lamp posts give it a very different feel to the rest of the city. Gastown is scenic and photogenic and has also become one of the trendiest areas of Vancouver. It’s full of nice boutiques, cool bars, and some of the city’s best food.
Granville Island is located just south of the Downtown peninsula and was once home to factories. Today, it’s a trendy part of Vancouver full of great restaurants and cafes. Head to Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver for a different suspension bridge experience and some nice hikes. The free suspension bridge has some amazing views of the canyon and the Twin Falls waterfall. Along with the bridge, Lynn Canyon Park is full of some extremely green and peaceful hikes. Close by in North Vancouver is another great hike at Quarry Rock. From there, you can see views of the harbour and some gorgeous waterfalls. North Vancouver is easily accessible from the city centre by public transport.
If you’d like to see more of British Columbia, rent a car for the day and check out some of the hikes outside of Vancouver. North of the city, Joffre Lakes Provincial Park has lots of different hikes. These hikes offer beautiful views of the large lakes and the glacier-topped mountains that surround the park. From Joffre Lakes, you can easily head over to Whistler—a resort town surrounded by lakes and mountains. Whistler has lots of different hikes to choose from, such as the scenic trail around Garibaldi Lake.
Queen Elizabeth Park
Queen Elizabeth Park is the highest point in Vancouver, which makes for some pretty great views of the Vancouver skyline and the mountains behind it. The park is located south of Downtown in Central Vancouver. Queen Elizabeth Park is made up of beautiful gardens and is home to the Bloedel Conservatory, which is full of exotic birds and plants.

There are several ways you can get to Sydney Airport (also called Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport). The most affordable option is to catch the Airport Link train, which departs from many different train stations around Sydney. It has stops in Central Station, Wynyard, Bondi Beach, and Darling Harbour. The Airport Link even has stops in some outer suburbs, such as Wollongong. Train times and prices vary by your departure point. Trains from the CBD only take about 15 minutes to the airport, while trains from Bondi take about 45 minutes. CBD train tickets cost $18.70, and Bondi tickets are $19.70. On Airport Link, you can purchase an individual ticket or pay with your Opal Card.
With the airport so close to the CBD, a taxi or Uber are a great option to get to the airport quickly. A taxi ride from the CBD takes around 20 minutes and costs about $45-$60. Catching a taxi from Bondi, you’ll have a similar fare between $45-$65 and a ride taking less than a half hour.
Parking at Sydney Airport
The most budget-friendly option for parking at Sydney Airport is the Blu Emu car park. A free 24 hour shuttle service runs between Blu Emu and the Domestic Terminal. The shuttle takes about 15 minutes and runs every 15-30 minutes. From the Domestic Terminal, you can catch a free train to the International Terminal, which runs from 5AM-midnight. It costs about $30 a day to park at Blu Emu, but by booking in advance, you can get even better rates.
The P7 car park is another option for the easiest access to the International Terminal. The P7 car park is only a 5 minute walk from the terminal and offers covered parking. A spot in this car park will cost you about $55 a day when you book in advance.
Arriving in Vancouver
Vancouver Airport is located 13 km south of the city centre on Sea Island. Vancouver Airport is the second busiest airport in Canada and has lots of international flights connecting the city to the rest of the world. Getting to the city from Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
The Canada Line train is the public transport option from Vancouver Airport into the city. Once you go through customs and collect your luggage, walk into the International Arrivals Greeting Area. From there, you will see signs pointing you in the direction of the Canada Line. The train makes several stops in the Vancouver area, including Richmond, Olympic Village, Vancouver City Centre, and the Waterfront. When you take the train from Vancouver Airport, there is a $5 charge that will be added to the normal zone rate. If you are travelling to the city centre or waterfront, tickets cost $7.95 including the surcharge. If you’ll be taking public transport often during your time in Vancouver, you can purchase a Compass Card, which will give you a discounted rate. The card costs $6 and can be refunded if you return it at the end of your holiday.
A taxi will get you from Vancouver Airport to the city centre in less than 25 minutes. To catch a taxi, head outside Level 2 of International Arrivals. The central areas of Vancouver are broken up into zones, each with a fixed taxi rate. Much of central Vancouver falls into Zone 6, which is $28. Zone 8 makes up Downtown Vancouver and a portion of the waterfront and costs $31. The rest of the waterfront is spread across Zones 9, 10, and 11 and costs between $35-$37.
