Getting Around Split, Croatia

• Split is a compact pedestrian city. Most of the city's sights can be seen on foot, but if you need to get around faster, there are a few options to choose from.
• The bus system in Split is extensive, cheap and comfortable. Most of the city buses are new with air conditioning and tickets are on sale from the driver or at kiosks. A one-way trip will set you back HRK 9 to HRK 11, and the service runs Monday to Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to midnight.
• If you want to get in some exercise while taking in the sights at your own pace, you can rent a bike. The city has beautiful trails along the waterfront and going up to Marjan hill. Rental prices are HRK 26 for the day and include free delivery of the bike.
• An excellent way to experience the city's best sights is with the hop on hop off bus. The tour lasts 45 minutes and has nine stops including the Diocletian's Palace for HRK 89 per person.
• You won't be able to hail a taxi from the street in Split. Taxis wait at stations until called out, or you can use Uber to get around as well.

When is The Best Time to Visit Split?

The best time to visit Split is during its shoulder seasons of May to June and September to October. The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, and you'll be able to experience all the city's sights without the crowds. Prices are also cheaper compared to the summer months, and you'll scoop up deals on flights and accommodation.

If you are planning to visit Split during July and August, prepare yourself for a rather chaotic atmosphere. The city is bursting with tourists, and it's nearly impossible to get onto a ferry without a prior booking. Book your accommodation several months in advance to avoid the seasonal price hike and to ensure availability.

But if you can handle the hot weather and crowds, it's one of the best times to experience Split's many cultural events and cosmopolitan nightlife.

Split's low season is from November to April. Many hotels and attractions close for the winter months and temperatures drop to 7°C. Budget travellers will be able to score low-cost flights and accommodation deals from the hotels that stay open. With the summer crowds gone, it's also one of the most authentic times to visit and experience how the locals live.

Airports in Split

Split Airport

Split is an international airport 24 km from the city centre. It's Croatia's second busiest airport after Zagreb and has handled over 2.3 million passengers in 2016. The airport is a hub for Croatia Airlines and is a major destination for travellers during the European summer holiday season.

Getting To and From Split Airport

One of the cheapest ways to get from the airport into Split is with the airport bus. A one-way ticket costs HRK 30, and it will take about 40 minutes to get to town. If you do plan on using this option, check the departures schedule beforehand as several routes are seasonal.

If you can't catch the airport bus, hop on board bus line #37 that runs between Split and Trogir. The bus departs from the main road in front of the airport and runs every 20-30 minutes. A one-way ticket costs HRK 20 and journey time is around 40 minutes.

The main taxi stand at the airport is outside the arrivals terminal. A ride to Split costs around HRK 250 to HRK 300 and prices should be agreed upon before you get in.

Other options include a pre-booked private transfer for HRK 260 per person or if you want more freedom getting around you can hire a car at the airport as well.
