Know Before You Go

• The taxi drivers in Prague are notorious for ripping off tourists. To get around this, you can either call an Uber or order a taxi from an operator by phone. You'll get a text message with the approximate fare, and the driver's behaviour will be monitored.
• If you are visiting Prague during high season, avoid the Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square in the afternoon. Rather visit these popular main attractions in the morning or late at night when the crowds are thin, and you'll have more personal space.
• Prague is a walkable city, but you need sensible shoes if you plan to explore by foot. Make sure you pack footwear that will give you extra support on all those cobblestones.
• While the tap water in Prague is drinkable, you do need to take a few precautions. Avoid water from the fountains and keep a look out for "do not drink" labels especially on trains.
• Most restaurants have their menus in both English and Czech, but if you come across one in a dozen languages consider it a red flag. Restaurants like those tend to be the most overpriced and locals stay away.
• If you plan on tasting the city's famous beer, be wary of the prices. Pubs selling a 0.5l beer for more than CZK 30 - 40 are charging too much.

Getting Around Prague

Prague has an extensive public transport network to get you around the city. The trams, subways and buses can get you to any destination and are cheap, safe and reliable. Tickets are valid for all types of transport making transfers easy and cost-effective.

If you want to save money and plan on staying in the city for more than a few hours, buy a day pass. It will only set you back CZK 55 - 110 per adult, and it's more affordable than buying individual tickets.

• If you are in a rush and travelling short distances, the tram is the best way to get around between neighbourhoods. It runs from 5:00 am to 12:30 am with limited service through the night.
• The metro is the best option if you want to visit outlying areas or travel across longer distances. It runs from 5:00 am to midnight.
• Buses have routes in areas not covered by the tram or metro. They run from 4:30 am to midnight with a limited service at night running every 40 minutes.
• If you aren't in a rush walking is the best way to see the city. Much of the centre is closed off from cars, making it the only option to get around in some areas.

When is The Best Time to Visit Prague?

The best time to visit Prague is spring and early autumn. From March to May and September to October, temperatures are mild, the crowds are thin, and hotel rates are affordable. But while these months aren't as popular, it's still a good idea to book your room a few weeks in advance.

Prague's summer months from June to August are it's busiest. The city's warm weather attracts travellers from all around the world, pushing up airfare and hotel rates. Expect to find popular attractions filled with crowds and restaurants requiring reservations.

But despite the influx, Prague is still one of the cheapest European cities to visit in summer. Just book your accommodation at least a month in advance to lock in deals and avoid disappointment.

Winter time in Prague is low season. From November to February the city is almost free of tourists meaning you'll have the top attractions all to yourself. If you don't mind the cold, it's also an excellent time of year to stretch your travel budget with hotel prices as low as the city's temperatures. 

Airports in Prague

Václav Havel Airport

Václav Havel is an international airport 12 kilometres from Prague. It is the busiest airport in the newer EU states and connects passengers to 154 destinations across Europe, Asia and North America. The airport serves as a hub for Czech Airlines as well as a base for low-cost carriers Ryanair and Wizz Air.

Getting to and from Václav Havel 

If you are travelling on a budget, the cheapest way to get from the airport into Prague is with the public bus. You can take bus #119 or #100 to the nearest metro stop and catch the train into the city centre.

There are also minibuses that are more suitable if you are travelling with lots of luggage. The shuttles run every 30 minutes from 5:30 am to 9:30 pm to the metro stations and cost CZK 150 one-way.

If you want to catch a taxi, you'll find a line up right outside the Arrivals terminal. The cost from the airport is CZK 800 one way, and it's the most stress-free way to get into the city centre.
