Need to know

With clear blue skies, glorious sands and glittering, calm waters, Phuket is an island paradise, with plenty to see, do and experience within its borders. Phuket Province is the largest of 32 islands south of Thailand and a popular holiday destination.

Home to some of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches, Phuket has over 30 stretches of pure shores to discover. Lay back on the sands of Nai Harn Beach, snorkel in its crystal seas, or head to the smaller bay of Kata Noi Beach for complete tranquility.

Patong is the main resort town on the island and is abuzz with tourists and a party atmosphere. The streets are filled with busy shops and eateries and come alive at night when late-night bars, go-go bars and nightclubs open their doors. Nearby, Freedom Beach and Patong Beach are usually busy as a throng of tourists descend on its sands during peak times.

Phuket is filled with lush green rainforests and tall mountainous areas, with national parks scattered across the island. Head north to Khao Phra Thaew Royal Wildlife and Forest Reserve to experience the magnificent evergreen monsoon forest and to marvel at the exotic fauna and flora. Climb to the peak of Mount Nagakerd up to the Big Buddha statue and enjoy 360 degree views of the southern part of the island. Animal lovers won’t be able to resist Monkey Hill near Phuket Town where wild monkeys play along the road, or Tiger Kingdom, where you can get up close to tigers in captivity.

Getting around

You can walk around Phuket easily, but if you want to explore the island fully it may be better to find a mode of transport. Tuk tuks are available all over the island, with a higher presence in Patong, and are a relatively cheap way to get around. There are a few modern buses operating on the island that pass some major landmarks in Phuket City and some beaches. Motorbikes are also a popular choice due to the fine weather. There are many places offering motorbike rental across the island for around 150 -300 Baht per day. Car rentals are a lot more expensive than hiring a motorbike, depending on the vehicle type and length of rental time.

Phuket is a great place to visit all year round, with temperatures averaging between 23°C and 33°C. The best time to visit Phuket is during the dry season (from December to March). December and January are the hottest months with perfect beach weather, however, these are also the busiest months.

Monsoon season lasts from May to October and rates are lower during this time due to the humidity. Although it is wetter throughout these months, it’s rare that there will be continuous days of rainfall.

Phuket International Airport

Situated in the north of Phuket, Phuket International Airport is the only major airport on the island. The airport is the third busiest in Thailand and around 32 km from the centre of Phuket City. Flights make their way to Phuket International Airport from a number of destinations, including Bangkok, Hong Kong and Koh Samui. Direct flights travel to Phuket International Airport from some Australian state capitals, including Sydney and Melbourne.
