Flight Guide from Brisbane to Munich

Need to know

Situated in southern Germany, Munich is a cosmopolitan centre with plenty to offer. From its vibrant arts scene and interesting architecture through to its iconic annual events, there’s more than enough to see and do in this popular German city.

One of the country’s leading tourist destinations, Munich has grown to house a vibrant arts scene which caters to a variety of interests. From art galleries filled with classical and modern works through to live music and traditional opera, Munich’s performance venues and exhibition spaces are well worth exploring. Dance the night away at a concert, learn something new at one of Munich’s museums, or find your new favourite artwork in one of the city’s many galleries.

The capital of the Bavarian region, Munich bursts to life each year during the celebration of the annual—and original—Oktoberfest. The festival sees more than 7 million visitors flock to the city’s beer halls, with traditional costumes donned, local delicacies enjoyed, and plenty of beer steins emptied.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, Munich boasts a rich history and a fascinating blend of architecture. Wander through Munich’s streets to spot churches dating back to medieval times, discover reminders of the city’s involvement in World War II, or make your way past buildings reflecting different stylistic movements from centuries past.

Getting around

The city centre is compact enough to make travelling on foot both practical and enjoyable. To reach the outer suburbs, you can choose from an extensive and efficient network of trams and buses, as well as the U-Bahn (subway) and S-Bahn (urban rail). Be aware that bicycles are not permitted on trains during peak hours, and will incur a daily fee of €3.00 during off-peak hours. While it’s possible to purchase tickets on board buses and trams, tickets for rail services must be pre-purchased from ticket offices or vending machines. Choose from a range of ticketing options to suit your itinerary, including single tickets, day tickets, and weekly or monthly travel passes (IsarCard).

Munich is home to a rather unpredictable climate, with average highs reaching 23 degrees in summer and average lows dropping below zero in winter. Munich’s elevation and proximity to the Alps means that it receives more rain and snow than many other cities in Germany. Many visitors choose to put up with frequent thunderstorms to enjoy the pleasant summer temperatures, while winter (barring the holiday period around Christmas) marks the low season in Munich. The best time to visit Munich is in the shoulder season between March and May when temperatures have started to warm up, but the summer crowds haven’t yet arrived. Those visiting Munich for Oktoberfest should aim to book accommodation at least six months in advance.

Munich Airport

Munich Airport is located about 37 km north of the city. Flights travel to Munich Airport from a number of locations, including New York, Moscow, Bangkok, Copenhagen, Toronto and Paris. A bus or taxi from the airport should take about 40 minutes to reach the city centre.
