Flight Guide from Colombo to Melbourne

A Guide to Melbourne

Know Before You Go

Get online for free. If you run out of data and need to get online, log on to the city centre's free public WiFi. Melbourne gives it's residents and visitors 250MB of complimentary access every day.

Pack for every season. It's not uncommon for Melbourne to experience a heat wave one minute and a downpour the next. Make sure you're prepared for all possible conditions by keeping an umbrella, sunglasses and warm layers in your bag while exploring.

Watch the speed limits. Australia has strict road rules and makes use of traffic cameras to hit drivers with expensive fines if they don't obey the law.

Tipping isn't a thing in Australia. Due to the country's decent minimum wage salary, people don't need to rely on tips to survive. But if you feel the service was excellent, you're welcome to add 10% to your bill or round up the payment.

Time your visit with a festival. As Australia's "culture capital" there is always something happening in Melbourne. Check to see what events are taking place and grab a ticket. You won't regret it.

Getting Around Melbourne

Explore the city with the tram. There is a free service that runs throughout the CBD and stops by all the major attractions and landmarks.

Hop on board the public bus. Melbourne has an extensive service that operates more than 300 routes. With fares starting at AUD 2.70 it's an affordable way to get around the CBD and the nearby suburbs.

Take the train. Melbourne has a City Loop service that stops at five stations in the city. Tickets start at AUD 2.70, and most trains operate from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Monday to Friday; 24 hours on Saturdays and until 1:00 a.m. on Sundays.

Hit the pavements. Sign up for one of Melbourne's free walking tours to learn more about the city's past or wander between the top attractions at your own pace.

Hail a taxi. Metered taxis and ride-sharing services are available in Melbourne. You can either hail a driver from the street or use an app to request your ride.

Hire a car. While it's not recommended to use a vehicle for exploring Melbourne's CBD due to the heavy congestion, it's ideal if you're planning day trips to destinations outside of the city's limits.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Melbourne?

The best time to visit Melbourne is during its shoulder seasons. From March to May and September to November, you'll find lower hotel rates and fewer crowds at the city's top attractions. You'll also be around for the change of seasons. In spring, Melbourne is full of blooming flowers as temperatures start to rise and in autumn it's awash with hues of gold, red and orange.

The busiest time of year to visit Melbourne is in the summer months. From December to February, hotels book up fast, and airlines raise their prices. Temperatures are warm, peaking at highs of 30°C, making it ideal for a day at the beach. If you want to lock in a better deal, book your trip a few months in advance before the seasonal prices kick in.

For frugal travellers, Melbourne is at its cheapest between June and August. As the temperatures drop, you'll find better deals for hotel rooms, and you can take part in the many indoor cultural events.

Airports in Melbourne

Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport is the second busiest airport in Australia. It's a hub for Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and other domestic carriers. It operates flights to over 30 local destinations as well as to cities in North America, Asia, Europe and the Pacific.
Getting To and From Melbourne Airport
If you're short on time, the best way to get from the airport is with the SkyBus. It departs every 10 minutes and costs only AUD 19 each way.

Other options include taking a shared airport shuttle or one of the charter, regional and public buses to your final destination.

The taxi stand is located outside of the arrival terminal. A trip into the CBD should set you back AUD 42-52. Ride-sharing services are also available, and you can meet your driver at the pickup zone on level 2 of the T4 Ground Transport Hub.

For travellers that prefer having more freedom, you can hire a car from one of the rental desks when you arrive.

Avalon Airport

Avalon Airport is Melbourne's second airport. It only operates flights with domestic airline Jetstar and services routes to Sydney, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

Getting To and From Avalon Airport
The cheapest way to get to and from Avalon Airport is with the Avalon City Express. It runs between the CBD and Werribee, meeting every major flight.

Your only other transport options are metered taxis, ride-sharing services or hiring a car from one of the rental desks inside the Arrivals Hall.
