Getting Around Malaga

• Malaga is home to 29 km of bicycle lanes throughout the city. It's one of the best ways to get your bearings, visit the famous sights and get a workout. Make sure you stop along the promenade for beautiful sea views, especially at sunset. Rentals start at EUR 5 for half a day, and you can also join city bike tours.
• If you want to explore the city by foot, you won't have any hassles. Most the city's sights are within walking distance as well as the nightlife and popular hotels. The city centre is also car-free, so you can enjoy your stroll without the stress of dodging traffic along the way.
• Once you get tired of walking, you can hop on board the city's extensive bus system. The buses run from 6:45 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and there are three-night buses you can use as well. A single ride will cost EUR 0.80, and you can buy ten rides in bulk for EUR 5.70.
• There's also a City Sightseeing bus that you can take. The buses run to all the main sights of Malaga in 1.5 hours from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tickets cost EUR 15 for adults and EUR 7 for children.
• A faster way to get around the city is with a taxi. It costs around EUR 5 for stops within the city, but always check to see if walking would be the better option before you hail one down.
• For travellers that want to have their own wheels, you can hire cars in the city and at the airport. Many car rental companies are competing for business, so prices are kept low which is great news if you're on a budget.

When is The Best Time to Visit Malaga?

Malaga's high season is during its summer months. From June to August the city is hot and dry with temperatures reaching highs of 30°C. It's the ideal time of year for visitors who want to hit the beach, enjoy the warm evening temperatures and the city's nightlife. The only downside is that the influx of tourists will drive prices up. Book your flights and accommodation a few months in advance to lock in better rates.

By the end of August, the summer crowds have left, and Malaga is a lot quieter, making the autumn months an ideal time to visit. From September to November, temperatures cool down to an average of 20°C, and hotel rates start to drop. Make sure you pack some light layers for the evening and a raincoat for the occasional rain spell.

Another great shoulder season is during Spring. From March to May, temperatures start to warm up, and you'll have the city to yourself as the summer crowds have yet to arrive. Some days can still get quite chilly, so pack a few warm layers to keep you warm. For budget travellers, it's one of the best times to find deals on flights and accommodation.

Malaga's low season is its winter months. From December to February the city's chilly weather keeps tourists at bay. But if you don't mind the cold temperatures and rain, it's one of the cheapest times to visit. Just make sure you pack an umbrella and a coat to keep warm as you explore the city.

Airports in Malaga

Malaga is the fourth busiest airport in Spain and is located 8 km from the city centre. It's an important route for Spanish tourism as it's the main international entry point for the Costa del Sol. The airport is a base for Air Europa, Norwegian Airlines, Ryanair and Vueling. It operates flights to over 60 countries around the world and serves 16 million passengers every year.

Getting To and From Malaga Airport

One of the cheapest and most convenient ways to get from the airport into town is with the express bus. Tickets cost EUR 2, and it takes around 25 minutes to reach Malaga. The bus runs every day from 7:00 a.m. to midnight and terminates at the Plaza del General Torrijos.

If you miss the express, there are a variety of public buses that also stop at the airport. Look up the different routes online to find out which bus is the right one for your final destination or ask the information desk at arrivals.

Another affordable way to get to Magala is with the train. A one-way ticket costs between EUR 1.70 to EUR 2.60, and it takes 12 minutes to get to the city centre.

For travellers that have large bags, taking a taxi is the better option. Head to the arrivals area outside Terminal T3 to find a fleet of waiting cabs. The rates depend on the time of day and day of the week but cost around EUR 15 to EUR 20 excluding supplements.
