Things to do in Kuala Lumpur

Petronas Towers

These twin towers are the tallest in Kuala Lumpur and the city’s most recognisable icon. The towers are the tallest twin towers in the world and are an impressive sight both during the day and at night. On the 41st and 42nd floors of the towers, there is a Skybridge that links them together. Taking a walk on the Skybridge will offer some great views of the city and the area around the Petronas Towers.

KL Tower

For another incredible view over Kuala Lumpur, pay a visit to the KL Tower. Head up to the top, and there are a couple of observation decks that you can visit. The main observation deck has floor to ceiling windows and 360 degree views of the city. And for a few extra dollars, you can also visit the upper observation deck. This one is located outside and offers beautiful, uninterrupted views of the KL skyline.

National Mosque of Malaysia

For an insight into the spiritual side of Kuala Lumpur, head to the National Mosque in the city centre. The mosque has a bright and beautiful design that’s full of natural light. You can walk along the outside and inside of the mosque for some great views of the architecture and fountain. Before you visit the mosque, be sure to check the timetable online. The mosque is closed to non-Muslims at certain times of the day in order for locals to visit and pray.

Central Market

The Central Market has both indoor and outdoor sections and has rows upon rows of booths to browse. Throughout the market, you’ll find booths selling food, clothing, and souvenirs.

The Temples of KL

Throughout Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find lots of beautiful temples. Many of them are Hindu and Chinese, and are great ways to learn about these cultures. Some of the most popular temples to visit include Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Guan Di Temple, and Sin Sze Sin Ya Temple. Just outside the city centre is another beautiful temple called Theon Hou Temple, which is accessible by bus or taxi.

Batu Caves

One of the top tourist attractions in Kuala Lumpur is a short train ride from the city. The Batu Caves are north of KL and are dedicated to Lord Murugan—the Hindu god of war. Inside the caves, you’ll find a shrine dedicated to him. The caves are carved into a limestone hill, and 272 steep steps will take you into the caves to see the shrine.

Jalan Alor

One of the best ways to experience another culture is by eating their food. And one of the best areas to eat in Kuala Lumpur is Jalan Alor. The street is lined with restaurants and cafes serving up authentic Malaysian cuisine. Some Malaysian foods to try during your holiday are laksa, satay skewers, nasi lemak, hokkien mee, and mee goreng.

Getting to Avalon Airport (AVV)

The Skybus has an Avalon City Express route, which picks up passengers in Southern Cross station and on Synnot Street in Werribee. Tickets from the CBD cost $22, and tickets from Werribee are $19.
