Known for its religious populus, many religious sites and points of interest are dotted throughout the city. Durbar Square is home to a good selection of temples, while the UNESCO World Heritage listed Swayambhu and Boudha Stupa are also well worth a visit.
Found within the Kathmandu Valley, the city offers plenty of opportunities to head outdoors and get active. Join a guided walking tour through the city’s streets or spend time hiking beyond the city’s edge, soaking up views of the city and the Himalayas as you go. The crisp air and snow-capped peaks give way to mist-shrouded valleys, offering the perfect surroundings for reflection. Pass small villages, take in the exotic flora and fauna, and discover crumbling, grand temples and hidden places of worship along the way.
It’s easy to get around Kathmandu by foot and it can sometimes also be quicker than travelling by car or taxi due to high traffic on its bustling streets. There are many rickshaws operating in the centre of the city, as well as taxi services and buses. The main bus station is located in Ratna Park where you can find buses travelling to most places in the city. It is best to keep in mind, however, that poor roads and delays can make taking the bus the slowest option.
The best time to visit Kathmandu is at the start of its dry season (October to November) after the monsoon season has passed and the greenery of the countryside it at its most beautiful.
If you plan on trekking in the mountain areas surrounding the city, plan to visit at the end of the dry season (February to April) for an easier journey. The weather is warmer throughout this period, but can also be very humid.
The only international airport in Nepal, Tribhuvan International Airport has been serving travellers since 1955. The airport is situated 6 km east of Kathmandu and is set in the middle of the Kathmandu Valley. Flights make their way to Tribhuvan International Airport from a number of destinations, including Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Delhi and Hong Kong. There are no direct flights to Kathmandu from Australia
