Kathmandu Guide

Need to know

Over time, Kathmandu has evolved into a true melting pot of cultures, cuisines and more. Situated just north of the Bagmati River, the city has attracted visitors from Asia and further afield seeking adventure and enlightenment. Whether you’re set to enjoy an extended stay in the city, or simply a short visit, you’re sure to experience something different in the Nepalese capital.

Kathmandu has established itself as a city filled with diverse cultures, religions and flavours. Immerse yourself in the city’s unique way of life, take time out to watch on as the locals go about their day and please your palate with Tibetan, Chinese and Indian cuisines.

Known for its religious populus, many religious sites and points of interest are dotted throughout the city. Experience the city’s spiritual side and find the time to get in touch with its ancient practices with a visit to a sacred site such as Kumari Ghar or Pashupatinath Temple . Durbar Square is home to a good selection of temples, while the UNESCO World Heritage listed Swayambhu and Boudha Stupa are also well worth a visit.

Found within the Kathmandu Valley, the city offers plenty of opportunities to head outdoors and get active. Join a guided walking tour through the city’s streets or spend time hiking beyond the city’s edge, soaking up views of the city and the Himalayas as you go. The crisp air and snow-capped peaks give way to mist-shrouded valleys, offering the perfect surroundings for reflection. Pass small villages, take in the exotic flora and fauna, and discover crumbling, grand temples and hidden places of worship along the way.

Getting around

It’s easy to get around Kathmandu by foot and it can sometimes also be quicker than travelling by car or taxi due to high traffic on its bustling streets. There are many rickshaws operating in the centre of the city, as well as taxi services and buses. The main bus station is located in Ratna Park where you can find buses travelling to most places in the city. It is best to keep in mind, however, that poor roads and delays can make taking the bus the slowest option.

Best time to visit Kathmandu

The best time to visit Kathmandu is at the start of its dry season (October to November) after the monsoon season has passed and the greenery of the countryside it at its most beautiful.

If you plan on trekking in the mountain areas surrounding the city, plan to visit at the end of the dry season (February to April) for an easier journey. The weather is warmer throughout this period, but can also be very humid.
