When temperatures hover in the mid 21°’s (70’s) - low 26°’s (80’s) most of the year, any time of year is great for visiting Honolulu. Late December to mid-April brings hordes of surfers looking to take advantage of the humongous swells churning in the winter. This peak season can make it hard to find a hotel or elbow room at beach attractions. But it is the perfect time to see herds of humpback whales and other beautiful ocean creatures. Spring months between late April and June can be the best time to snag deals on cheap flights from Adelaide to Honolulu. This time of year experiences light rainfall, but not enough to deter outdoor activities. Summer’s endless sunshine and warm water temperatures leads to packed beaches and quickly-booked tourist attractions. If you’re planning a trip in July through mid-September, be sure to book hotels and attractions well in advance. The increased rains during autumn months of September through December will not deter many outdoor festivals taking place in Honolulu. Autumn is full of festivals celebrating food, wine, culture, fashion, and more.

Departing From Adelaide

A return flight from Adelaide to Honolulu can last between 14 and 19 hours. Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar offer cheap airfares from ADL to HNL with stopovers in Sydney (SDY) or Melbourne (MEL). 

Getting to Adelaide Airport

There are several ways of travelling to Adelaide Airport from the city. One of the most convenient and budget-friendly is using the Metro bus system. The J1X JetExpress line offers a double decker bus equipped to handle additional luggage, while passengers travelling light can hop on J1, J1A, J2, J7 or J8 lines. These services accept metroCARDs or a one-way metroticket can be purchased for $5.50 AUD in peak times or $3.60 AUD in off-peak times. For a more direct method of travel, opt to use a taxi or Uber. Both will get you to the airport in about 15 minutes and average out between $23 and $27 AUD.

Parking at Adelaide Airport

Adelaide Airport has two parking options for travellers who plan on leaving their car at the airport while they enjoy cheap airfares to Honolulu. Booking a car space in advance is recommended for those travelling during high season, or for those wanting to save money off of drive-up rates. 

Where to Park at Adelaide International Airport

Leaving your car at the airport for more than a few days can be pricey but Adelaide’s two long term car park options are designed to keep your car safe without breaking your budget.
 
Terminal Car Park: This area has more than 1600 spaces available. When you pull in, vacant slots will be visible from afar with the special parking system that directs drivers along the way. Once you park on any of the four levels, simply grab your bags and head to the terminals via the covered walkway located on level 2. Two-day parking in the Terminal Car Park is $80 plus $20 for each subsequent day.
Long Term Car Park: Located a 10-minute walk to the terminals, or you can take advantage of the free shuttle transfer to the terminals. Shuttles run every 20 minutes from 4:30am to 11:20pm. Two-day parking in the Long Term park will cost $51 and $15 for each subsequent day.

How to Get from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport to Your Honolulu Hotel or Accommodation

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is the main airport for flights in and out of Oahu. It is also where passengers will land if they have connecting flights to Maui or another of Hawaii’s idyllic islands. HNL is located a 15-minute drive from downtown Honolulu and a 20-minute drive from Waikiki. An island-wide bus transportation system in Oahu is a good option for travelling into Honolulu from the airport. Eastbound bus routes 19 and 20 will get you downtown in about 20 minutes. You can purchase a one-way fare for $3.50AUD. If you need a ride around Honolulu during your entire stay, you can purchase a 4-day unlimited bus pass for $34AUD. The Roberts Hawaii Airport Shuttle will take you from the Honolulu airport to your hotel for a flat rate of $22AUD. You can pick up the shuttle on the sidewalk between baggage claim 17 and the International Arrivals. Metered taxis are on hand at Honolulu airport just outside the baggage claim areas. Fares range from $55 to $62AUD and can be arranged with the Taxi Dispatcher at the taxi rank.

Things to do in Honolulu

It’s hard to miss Honolulu’s giant dormant volcano, Diamond Head, as you land at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). Make a point to walk up the 1.6-kilometre trail to the volcano’s summit for stunning views of Honolulu. It is a relatively easy walk with a steady incline, however the trail is well-marked and the sweeping outlook across the city is definitely worth the extra effort. Waikiki is the most popular tourist destination in Honolulu and has earned itself a reputation for its sprawling beaches, great shopping and vibrant nightlife. Dedicate a couple of days to exploring Waikiki’s land-based opportunities before getting your hair wet and trying your hand at one of the city’s water sport activities. The warm waters and good breaks invite year-round surfing, bodyboarding, and stand-up paddle boarding. For a great snorkelling experience, head to Hanauma Bay on the east side of Oahu. Visitors are required to watch a five-minute video on marine life preservation before hitting the water to discover this incredible nature reserve and marine sanctuary. One of the must-dos for most visitors to Honolulu is an excursion to Pearl Harbor. The US naval base site is infamous for its role in the Pacific Ocean theatre of WWII. Visitors can tour the site and learn from exhibitions and installations, and there is also an opportunity to voyage out to the sunken USS Arizona memorial.
