Know Before You Go
- If you love visiting museums when you travel, buy the Frankfurt Museumsufer Ticket. For EUR 18, you'll get access to 34 museums as well as any special exhibitions.
- Germans never eat with their hands, so don't be surprised to see the locals eating a piece of pizza, french fries or a pretzel with a knife and fork.
- Tipping is not mandatory in Germany. Waiters, bellboys and porters do not expect it, but you are welcome to tip exceptional service.
- If you want to taste the best cider in Frankfurt, head to Sachsenhausen. It's the best place in the city to grab something to eat and wash it down with a pint at the local pub.
- Public toilets are not free. If you want to use them, you'll have to pay around EUR 0.50 so keep some spare change on you while exploring the city.
- Free public Wi-Fi isn't available everywhere in Frankfurt. If you need to get online, your best bet will be to head to Starbucks or fast food outlet Burger King.
Getting Around Frankfurt
Frankfurt has an extensive network of subways, streetcars and buses that operate around the city. Single fare tickets start at EUR 1.80, or you can buy a one-day U-Bahn ticket for EUR 7.
Tickets are valid for all forms of public transportation, making transfers easy as you make your way around the city.
- Buses are the best way to get back to your hotel late at night. From 1:00 am to 4:00 am you can catch the Night Liner, but check the route beforehand as some only run on certain days.
- If you want to get in some exercise while exploring the city, bike rentals are a popular way to see Frankfurt. Rental prices start at EUR 10 per day and are available 24/7 from most street corners.
- Taxis are the most expensive way to get around the city. You can grab a cab at a designated taxi stand or by hailing one down in the street. Fares start at an initial EUR 2.50 and after every kilometre EUR 1.70.
- With a variety of public transport options available, only rent a car if you plan on travelling to destinations outside of the city. Inside Frankfurt's city centre, you'll struggle to find parking and if you do manage to grab a spot, it won't be cheap.
When is The Best Time to Visit Frankfurt?
The best time to visit Frankfurt depends on what you want to do while in the city. There are many festivals throughout the year that attract visitors of different tastes and interests.
During the city's peak tourist season (June to August) you can expect a lot of fairs and festivals. While it is the busiest and most expensive time to visit, you'll never run out of things to do.
If you are travelling on a budget, it's best to book your travel dates around trade fair season. Accommodation around this time is expensive and almost impossible to find especially during the Frankfurt Motor Show and Book Fair.
Late spring (April to May) and early autumn (August to September) are the best seasons to visit for perfect weather. Temperatures are cool, but not freezing making it easy to explore the city on foot. Hotel rates are cheaper during these two seasons, and fewer people at popular attractions in the city.
Frankfurt's winter months (December to March) often bring in sub-zero temperatures and minimal crowds. If you can brave the freezing temperatures, you'll be rewarded with lower hotel rates as well as the chance to experience the wonderful winter markets.
