Know Before You Go

  • The best vantage point of Edinburgh is Arthur's Seat. It will take two hours to reach the peak, and you'll be rewarded with views of Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle and the unique cityscape below.
  • If you need to access the internet and don't want to buy a SIM card, you're in luck. The city recently introduced a free Wi-Fi service throughout the city centre to help tourists get online.
  • Visit Edinburgh in August for its annual string of festivals. You'll be able to attend some of the best stand-up comedy shows from established comedians as well as up and comers.
  • A 10% tip is included with every meal at restaurants. However, you can always leave more if you feel the service was exceptional.

Getting Around Edinburgh

Edinburgh is best explored by foot. Its compact size makes it easy to get around and see many of the top attractions in New Town and Old Town. But if the weather drives you to seek alternatives there are many:

  • Buses are the next best thing to walking in Edinburgh. A single journey costs GBP 1.60, but if you are going to be in town for a few days, you'll save more money by purchasing a one-week Ridacard pass for GBP 18.
  • Edinburgh's tram system only has one line from the airport into the city's centre. It stops at many points of interest along the way including Princes Street and St Andrews Square. Tickets cost GBP 1.60 for all stops except the airport and can be purchased at every tram station.
  • Taxis are widely available, but the more expensive option for getting around the city. Fares between 6:00 am to 6:00 pm start at GBP 2.10 and at night increase to GBP 3.10 for each kilometre.
  • If you decide to hire a car, plan your route in advance. Edinburgh has many compact, one way and pedestrian only streets that make driving difficult for a first-time visitor.

When is The Best Time to Visit Edinburgh?

The best time to visit Edinburgh is between June and August. Not only is the weather warm (for Scotland), but it's also a chance to experience the city's many festivals. If you hate crowds though, you might want to give this season a miss as it's Edinburgh's busiest time for tourism.

Otherwise, book your accommodation months in advance to lock in rates before they start to skyrocket.

November to March are Edinburgh's winter months. If you can handle the cold and don't mind the short daylight hours, you'll save on accommodation and airfare. Except during the city's New Year celebration, Hogmanay, when airfare increases and affordable hotel prices become scarce.

Spring and fall are another great time to visit the city. From April to May and September to October, temperatures are mild, and crowds are thinner. You'll be able to find hotel and airfare deals as well as see all the popular attractions minus the crowds and long lines. Just pack a heavy winter jacket for October as temperatures start to drop well below 10°C.
