Dunedin Guide

A Guide to Dunedin

Know Before You Go

  • Check out Dunedin's famous farmer markets. The city is known for its fresh vegetables and delicious fruit from Central Otago in the summer months.
  • Visit the beaches. Dunedin is only 20 minutes away from Sandfly Bay, Allan's Beach, Long Beach and Warrington. There are loads of photo opportunities at each one, and the crowds are usually at a minimal.
  • Get your shopping fix. George Street is known for having the best shops ranging from designer couture to boutique finds. Bring along an empty suitcase, just in case, you can't control yourself.
  • Visit the nearby wildlife. Taiaroa Head is home to the world's only mainland Albatross breeding colony as well as the rare Yellow-Eyed Penguin. It's the perfect opportunity to see these creatures in their natural habitat while driving along the Otago Peninsula’s west coast.
  • Learn about Dunedin's brewing history. Go on a tour of the Speight brewery and watch them craft the beverage from scratch before sitting down for some beer tastings.

Getting Around Dunedin

  • Take the bus. Dunedin's public bus service is one of the city's cheapest transportation options. Fares start from NZD 2, and the main line runs every 15 minutes, stopping at most of Dunedin's top attractions.
  • Hire a bicycle. Dunedin's city centre is flat, making it perfect for cyclists to explore. Rentals start at NZD 10 per day, and you'll need to buy a helmet for NZD 20 if you don't have your own.
  • Hit the pavements. If you're on a tight budget, you can save a lot of money by exploring the city on foot. There aren't any steep inclines, making it easy to walk to the city's major attractions.
  • Grab a taxi or rent a car. If you don't feel like walking, metered taxis are readily available and an affordable option. But if you want more freedom getting around, car hire prices in Dunedin start at NZD 125 per day.

Best time to visit Dunedin

When is The Best Time to Visit Dunedin?

Dunedin's high season runs from November to March. The mild temperatures attract local and international visitors during the festive period. To save money, book your flights and hotel room a few months in advance before prices start to skyrocket.

For frugal travellers, the best time to visit is during the city's two shoulder seasons: May and September to October. The hotels in Dunedin slash their prices, flights are cheaper, and crowds are at a minimum.

Dunedin is at its quietest in winter. From June to August, the city experiences its highest rainfall, keeping many visitors at bay. But if you don't mind sticking to indoor activities, you'll be able to pick up great deals on hotel rooms and flights.
