The best time to visit Dunedin


Dunedin’s southern island location experiences moderately cooler temperatures compared to some of New Zealand’s northern towns. Warm days from November through April average between15-17°C (59-66°F). While the days are pleasant for many outdoor excursions, nights can drop down to7°C (44°F).  Crowds flock to the shores between December and January to take advantage of the warm weather and sunshine. If you’re traveling during these months, book your excursions well in advance.   Dunedin Airport (DUD) is 30 kilometers from the city centre. Many visitors use a taxi, shuttle or private car for airport transfer. You can book a private car either before departing Brisbane or inside Dunedin Airport upon arrival. Fare for a private car starts at $85 NZD ($80 AUD). Things to do in Dunedin


A must-see for any visitor to Dunedin is the Otago Peninsula. The long, hilly part of land forms the easternmost part of Dunedin. The breath-taking drive in is enough to write home about but once you arrive, you will see why so many people visit. You are literally at the end of the world at Otago Peninsula. Bring along snacks and plenty of water as there are no shops or water facilities nearby.  Feed the ducks, let the children play, visit the aviary, or simply marvel at the tiered arrangements throughout the Dunedin Botanic Garden. Visit in November for spectacular views of the rhododendrons. If the weather is nice, grab your board and head to St. Claire Beach for a day of surf and sand. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
