Dubbo is named after Dubbo Station, a property that was once owned by Robert Dulhunty, an early European settler in the region. It is believed that Dulhunty had misheard the pronunciation of a local Wiradjuri word meaning ‘red soil’ or ‘head covering’, arriving at the name we now use by accident.
