Central Auckland has a sophisticated city vibe. Queen Street offers high-end shopping from a range of designer brands, as well as a number of chic restaurants, cafes and bars. Downtown Shopping Centre can also be found here, boasting 70 stores with lots of great gift and souvenir ideas. High Street and Vulcan Lane are also popular shopping areas made up of laneways lined with charming boutiques. Auckland also has lots of cultural sites, museums and galleries. Alongside many smaller, contemporary art galleries is Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, the largest art institution in New Zealand. Those who want to learn more about New Zealand’s cultural heritage should head to the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
If you plan on staying in Auckland’s CBD, it’s often easier to get around on foot than to hire a car and brave the inner-city traffic. Parking spaces are also hard to find in the city, which can be frustrating. City Link bus services are a cheap and reliable way to see more of Auckland, and their colour-coded exteriors make it fairly easy to plan your journey. Train services run frequently within the city and go to most outer suburbs.

December, January and February encompass the peak season for travellers heading to Auckland. The weather warms nicely up at this time of year, but the cost of hotels and flights can be quite high. In many ways, travelling during autumn (March to May) should allow you get the best out of Auckland. Temperatures drop off slightly, but so do prices for accommodation and flights.
