Things to do in Auckland

Sky Tower

The Sky Tower is the tallest structure in Auckland and dominates the city’s skyline. You can see the beautiful Sky Tower from many different points around the city. For the best views over Auckland, head to the top of the Sky Tower. There is an observation deck as well as some restaurants where you can take in the incredible views of the city, harbour, and mountains.

Ponsonby

Ponsonby is located on one of the hills outside Auckland’s CBD and is considered to be one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in the city. The area is beautiful to walk around, and being located on a hill, it has some great views. Ponsonby is full of some of the best shopping in Auckland as well as lots of trendy restaurants and bars.

Mount Eden

Mount Eden is a dormant volcano located just outside Auckland’s CBD and is the highest natural point in Auckland. Take the quick (but challenging) walk to the top of Mount Eden for some amazing views of the Sky Tower and CBD and to get a good look into the centre of the volcano.

Waiheke Island

New Zealand is known for its delicious wine. One of the best places to go wine tasting in the country is on Waiheke Island, which is a 35 minute ferry ride from Auckland’s CBD. Within the town centre of Devonport, there is a chocolate factory and some great homeware and antique stores to check out. Before catching the ferry back into Auckland, be sure to spend some time walking along the Devonport side of the harbour for some nice skyline views.

The winter months get cold in Auckland, and rain is much more regular between the months of May and August. However, while weather isn’t perfect in the winter, there is still the occasional warm and sunny day.

Departing from Gold Coast

Gold Coast Airport is located at the southern end of the region in Bilinga. It’s the main airport for travellers departing from the Gold Coast as well as northern New South Wales. Each day, there are about 40 cheap flights from Gold Coast to Auckland. Several flights are direct, getting you there in about 3 hours.

Getting to Gold Coast Airport (OOL)

There are several options available to get to Gold Coast Airport. The SkyBus is an easy way to get to the airport from many suburbs of the Gold Coast. It makes stops in the major suburbs, including Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, and Southport. The bus picks passengers up from 400 different hotels around the area. If you live near a hotel, you could arrange to be picked up outside. The SkyBus runs every day between 5AM and 9PM. When catching the SkyBus to the airport, you’ll need to reserve your spot in advance. Tickets cost $21 for adults, and children ride the SkyBus for free.

You can also catch public transport to the airport. The 777 and 760 buses both make stops at the airport. The 777 runs every 15 minutes and originates from Broadbeach South tram station. The 760 bus departs every half hour and makes stops between Varsity Lakes train station and Tweed Heads.

If you prefer to take a taxi or an Uber to Gold Coast Airport, you’ll get there in about 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise, 15 minutes from Burleigh Heads, and less than 10 minutes from Coolangatta and Tweed Heads. A taxi from Surfers costs about $70-$95, taxis from Burleigh are about $40-$55, and a taxi from Tweed Heads costs around $20.

Parking at Gold Coast Airport

There are several options for parking at Gold Coast Airport. The most cost-effective is in the Budget car park. The Budget car park offers both covered and uncovered spots and offers a discount when you park for more than 4 days. Both the covered and uncovered car parks are within walking distance to the terminal. If you book a trip from OOL to AKL for 3 days, you’ll pay about $45 total for an uncovered spot and $62 for a covered spot. Plan a weeklong trip, and these parking spaces cost $87 and $115 for the week. Be sure to reserve your parking space in advance to get the best rates.

For the easiest access to the terminal, you can park in the Terminal Long Term car park. You’ll only need to walk about 2 minutes from your car to the terminal. The most cost-effective way to get from Auckland Airport (AKL) to the CBD is on the city’s SkyBus. The SkyBus runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Buses depart every 10 minutes, and tickets can either be purchased in advance or right at Auckland Airport (AKL) for the same price. The main SkyBus stop is near the harbour on Customs Street East, but there are also stops available along Queen Street, Dominion Road, Symonds Street, and Mount Eden Road. One-way tickets are $18, and if you plan to take the SkyBus back to Auckland Airport (AKL) at the end of your trip, return tickets are $32. The SkyBus has complimentary Wifi and will get you to the Auckland CBD in 40-60 minutes depending on traffic.

For a direct ride to your hotel, you can book a Super Shuttle from the International Terminal at Auckland Airport (AKL). A shuttle from the airport to the CBD costs about $25 per person for a shared ride. If you are travelling with a group, you can book a private shuttle for $125 into the CBD. Super Shuttles can seat up to eleven people with luggage. If you are staying outside of the CBD, a Super Shuttle is the best way to get to your hotel. A shuttle to Ponsonby is $25, a shuttle to Newmarket is $35, and a shuttle to Mount Eden is $35.

A taxi to the CBD takes less than a half hour. You can catch a taxi outside of door 8 in the International Terminal. There are several different taxi companies that pick up from Auckland Airport (AKL), and each offers fixed rates into the CBD. Cheap Cabs offers the lowest rate of $38. The other taxi companies offer a fixed rate of around $65 from Auckland Airport (AKL) into the CBD.
