Japan beyond the Cherry Blossoms and Ski Fields
Known as ‘The Land of The Rising Sun’, the many faces of Japan vary perhaps more than what travellers expect. The cool and crisp winter and blooming spring seasons are dominated by snow sports and cherry blossoms, but what about the rest of the year?
The weather in Japan’s early summer (the beginning of its ‘green’ season in late May and early June) is perfect for outdoor activities. Famed for its gorgeous greenery, Japan’s landscape in summer is truly stunning. The nation of islands features an abundance of green spaces, colourful flower fields and striking coastline.
The best way to discover Japan’s inspiring and jaw dropping sceneries, mountains and UNESCO World Heritage listed wilderness is by breaking away from the crowds and taking the path less trodden.
Whether it's hiking to a mountain peak past ancient temples, to experiencing a different side to the major cities that truly come alive in summer:
- Gion Festival is one of Kyoto’s biggest festivals held in July. Highlights include the ‘Yoiyama’, or Festival Eve, in which streets are closed and stalls are set up selling festival food and toys for children followed by the main event, the float procession on the following day.
- Every year in July and August, thousands of Japanese and international visitors alike make the climb to the top of Mt. Fuji, Japan’s tallest and most revered mountain.
- Japan's famous ‘three-star road’ takes in Takayama, Shirakawago, Gokayama and Kanazawa in central Honshu. All four have three stars in the Michelin Green Guide (which rates places of scenic beauty), giving the trail its name.
- Hokkaido’s amazing flower fields are best viewed from mid-late July. One of the most stunning is the aptly named Shikisai-no-oka, or 'colours of the four seasons hill'. Located in the town of Biei, this seven hectare flower garden should not be missed if sightseeing in the area.
- The best season to hike through Japan’s countryside and see the fresh verdure of early summer is end of May to mid-June. Places such as Kamikochi, Nagano come to life in this season.
Want to visit castles or learn how to make sushi? Travelling in Japan’s off seasons doesn’t mean you have to miss out on bucket list activities. These must-do experiences are available year-round with every season showcases different flavours, sights and sounds of this amazing country.
