The South Island starts here

Kaikoura, located just two and a half hours from Christchurch, is New Zealand's eco-tourism capital and has a range of activities from whale watching, swimming with dolphins to wilderness walks. In the Maori language, Kai means food and Koura means crayfish and there is plenty here for you to feast on. Visit Nin’s Bin on the Coast Highway, 15 minutes north of Kaikoura where you can eat crayfish served with melted butter and lemon.
The sensational Selwyn stretches across the great Canterbury plains and is bound by the mighty Rakaia and Waimakariri Rivers with Arthur's Pass National Park in the high Southern Alps to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. This area of 'middle earth' New Zealand has grand scenery and offers a variety of activities and pure Kiwi experiences.
Approximately three hours south of Christchurch is the Aoraki Mount Cook /Mackenzie region. A region home to a number of glacier fed lakes that feature crystal clear, stunning blue waters. Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd that sits on the edge of Lake Tekapo, view the night sky with Earth and Sky, eat some fresh salmon on the way to Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest peak.
Four hours further south is Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure capital. Here you can choose to relax and take in the breath taking scenery, made famous in Lord of the Rings and now the Hobbit, or you can take the plunge in more ways than one. Bungy off the Kawarau Bridge, plunge 109m into the canyon with the Shotover Canyon Swing. If taking the plunge is not your thing, you can always take a thrilling jetboat ride through the canyon with Shotover Jet or take a ride up the gondola and have fun on the luge ride at the top.
