Travelling to Zagreb, Croatia
Often overlooked as travellers rush to Croatia’s spectacular coastline, the country’s capital, Zagreb, is slowly getting the attention it deserves. It's growing popularity comes as no surprise, with its plethora of parks, plazas, churches, theatres and museums all easily accessible by foot, or via the network of distinctive blue trams that have been circuiting in the inner city since 1910.
Zagreb is divided into the ‘upper town’, the oldest part of town, and the ‘lower town’. Get your bearings in the town’s main square, Trg Bana Jelačića, which sits smack bang in the middle of the two, and then it's less than 10 minutes’ walk to Lotrscak tower, a 13th century construction offering 360 degree views over Zagreb. A block away is the Museum of Broken Relationships, one of the most popular and innovative museums in Zagreb, exhibiting a collection of objects left over from breakups.
Double back past Trg Bana Jelačića and through the Dolac Market, a massive vibrant fresh food market selling produce from all over Croatia. Next, you’ll come to the Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol Square, a beautiful gothic cathedral and one of Zagreb’s key landmarks.
Be sure and stop for a strong cup of coffee and some cake at one of the cafes you’ll find on virtually every street; Zagrebacki strukli, cottage cheese strudel, is a local specialty. For lunch, pop into one of the many traditional bistros in town and order roast duck with mlinci, baked, flatbread-like pasta shards steeped in soup. For dinner, Zagreb’s beer halls have a convivial atmosphere, as well as delicious local beers, platters of prosciutto and cheese, and hearty plates of grilled meats.
