A hire car or taxi from Ronald Reagan National Airport will take about 15 minutes, while the journey from Washington Dulles International Airport will take about 40 minutes and the drive from Baltimore Washington International Airport should take less than an hour.

Make sure you explore the National Mall, a large park which runs between Capitol Hill and the Lincoln Memorial. Must-visit monuments here include the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Pier in the mall’s centre and the various war memorials. At the National Mall you’ll find Washington's Museums under the banner of the Smithsonian Institution, including the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of American History, all of which are free.

Washington is also home to some fabulous restaurants, so make sure you make time to eat out. There are a huge range of cuisines on offer; Italian, Greek, French, Thai, Laotian, Mexican, Japanese, Ethiopian, regional Chinese, and more. Local specialties include Washington’s own Gin Rickey, a refreshing and potent cocktail of gin, lime juice and soda water, and the half pork, half beef smoked sausage which you can get at Ben’s Chili Bowl.
