Travelling to Split, Croatia
Split is set on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, and is the second largest city in Croatia after its capital, Zagreb. At more than 2,000 years old, it is one of the oldest cities in the area. With prices lower than in most of Croatia, it’s the ideal place to base yourself when exploring Dalmatia, including Dubrovnik, as well as the nearby islands.
The city of Split feels like a museum or historic monument. Its ancient city centre sits within the walls of Roman emperor Diocletian's retirement palace, built in the 4th century, and is home to the Split Cathedral and the Peristyle, an open air pavilion that comes alive at night. Visit museums, including the Archeological Museum, the oldest museum in Croatia, and the small town museum, which is housed in a 15th century Gothic palace. Four town gates are embedded in the city walls, which are surrounded by the charming 16th century neighbourhoods of Varos, Dobri, Lucac and Manus, with their picturesque stone houses and winding streets.
Hire a car and you’ll have the freedom to explore the nearby Roman ruins in nearby Solin, just 6 km away, at your leisure. Catch a boat to the nearby islands of Brac, Hvar, Solta or Vis, sun yourself on the beach or zip about on a motor scooter.
Be sure to visit the city’s famed seafront promenade, Riva, the social heart of Split lined with cafes and bars, centre stage for most of the city’s cultural events, from holy days to New Year’s Eve festivities. A visit to Split’s famous fish market, Pazar, is a seminal Split experience, and you can enjoy freshly-cooked seafood at restaurants all over town at very low prices. A visit to the city’s wine and olive oil bars is another must.
