Travelling to Montreal, Canada

Canada’s most ethnically diverse city and the largest metropolis in the French-Canadian province of Quebec, Montreal is one of the most interesting cities in North America. For amazing views of Montreal, head up Mont-Royal to the Belvedere observatory- a sunrise from this lookout is truly something else.

Walk along St Paul street in Old Montreal and you’ll swear you were in Europe. Old Montreal is a collection of narrow streets, pretty town squares, and beautiful buildings dating back as far as the 17th century. Make sure you visit the Basilique Notre Dame, with its distinctive midnight-blue ceilings and carved wooden arches, and the more modest the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, a popular wedding chapel which was contracted in 1771 over the ruins of an earlier chapel.

Amble through Marché Atwater, one of the city's oldest public markets, and the bustling Marché Jean-Talon, the largest open air market in North America and buy souvenirs, fresh food, or a snack. Montreal’s ‘underground city’ - a network of shops and food courts connected by pedestrian tunnels and the métro, is handy for getting around, especially in winter.

Montreal has a packed cultural calendar, with almost 100 festivals each year, and a thriving food scene and cafe culture - there’s a sidewalk cafe on almost every block. You simply must try poutine, a delicious dish of french fries and squeaky cheese curds smothered in gravy, and Montreal-style bagels, which are blanched in honey-sweetened water and then baked in a woodfired oven.
