Travelling to Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City is vibrant, bustling metropolis, and a must-visit city for any North American holiday. The oldest capital in the Americas, it's set in the Mexico Valley, and is one of only two cities originally founded by Amerindians (Native Americans).
Start your adventure in the city’s main square, known to the locals as ‘Zocalo’ but formally titled ‘Plaza de la Constitución’. A gathering place since Aztec times, it is one of the largest city squares in the world.
Next to Zocalo is the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest in the Americas. It was built on a sacred Aztec site from 1573 to 1813, around the original church that was constructed soon after the Spanish conquest of Mexico. The National Palace, built in 1521, is also located on Mexico’s main square, and is now the president’s residence.
The National Museum of Anthropology holds one of the most extensive collections of ancient Mexican sculpture, jewelry and artifacts in the world and is well worth a look. The Frida Kahlo Museum is truly something special - it’s housed in the artist’s actual home, which was built by her father. This is where Kahlo was born, lived and died, and is filled with her artworks, clothing, furniture and personal mementos.
If you get the chance, check out the Lucha Libre - Mexican wrestling - at Arena Mexico. Unique to Mexico, it’s characterised by high-flying moves and colourful masks. Don’t miss the city’s open air markets, or ‘Tianguis’, set up throughout the various neighbourhoods. Try tacos al pastor, spit roasted pork on small corn tortillas topped with pineapple, onions, coriander and salsas, or, for the more adventurous, fried ‘Chinicuiles’, plump caterpillars which are fed on agave plants.
