Travelling to Kiev, Ukraine
The capital of Ukraine and its largest city, Kiev is also one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, existing as early as the 5th century. Set on the Dnieper River, Kiev has a fascinating past that is reflected in its eclectic architecture, a mix of baroque buildings, domed Orthodox churches, modern high rises and solid Stalinist structures.
Begin your visit at Independence Square in the heart of Kiev for a visual overview of the city’s many pasts. From here you can catch the quaint funicular up the hill to the historic quarter and take in the views from Volodymyrska Hill, or catch it down to the buzzing neighbourhood of Podil. Getting around Kiev is really easy as well - the metro is cheap, easy to navigate and will take you to most of the city's main sights.
Kiev’s cathedrals, churches and monuments span many ages and architectural styles. Don’t miss St Sophia’s Cathedral, an outstanding example of Kievan Rus' architecture and one of Kiev’s most famous landmarks, and St Michael’s, with its intricate Byzantine Interiors.
For shopping, head to Khreschatyk Street, Kiev’s main street, which is lined with boutiques, cafes and restaurants and is pedestrianised on weekends. Khreschatyk runs from European Square to Bessarabska Square, which includes an indoor market. The street itself is also a tourist attraction, having been almost completely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in the soviet style.
Other must-dos include a visit to the Russian Art Museum, a walk along the lush right bank of the Dnieper River and exploring the Monastery of the Caves, an underground maze of churches and sacred sites. Be sure to try varenyky, Ukrainian dumplings stuffed with everything from mashed potato to sour cherries.
