The Swiss city of Geneva is a financial and diplomatic centre, famously politically neutral and completely cosmopolitan. Set on either side of the Rhone River, visitors love it for its beautiful scenery, world city status, and unique Swiss-French character.

Geneva is also a very walkable city. Explore the scenic old town on foot, strolling along the the pedestrian Place du Bourg-de-Four and discover ornate buildings, cute shops, and plentiful cafes. Visit the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, a relatively modest 13th century structure with fascinating pre-Christian ruins below.

Another must-do is a walk along Geneva’s waterfront, 5 km of paved promenade which runs past the Palais des Nations, home to the league of nations until 1936. Pop in and take a look at its magnificent assembly hall and extensive art collection. Continue your walk past the Jet d'Eau, Europe's tallest fountain which erupts from the harbour. Geneva is well known for its museums; the Red Cross Museum is eye-opening, the Reformation Museum is fascinating, and the Natural History Museum has a wonderful collection and entry is free.

Geneva is a city where you can truly shop ‘till you drop. Head to Rue du Rhône for luxury buys, it’s all high-end clothing, watches and jewelry, while Globus department store in the city centre is a touch more affordable, with an incredible food hall to boot. On Saturdays, head to Plainpalais flea market. Running since 1970, it's the largest flea market in Geneva and perfect for finding inexpensive secondhand treasures, everything from crystal vases to vintage clothing. And if you’ve worked up an appetite with a day of walking and shopping, fondue is a must-try, as are the famed swiss chocolates - the embodiment of the phrase ‘melt in the mouth’.
