Travelling to Dubrovnik, Croatia
Croatia’s southernmost town and it’s most visited tourist destination, the fortified city of Dubrovnik has been a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site since 1979. The most prominent feature of Dubrovnik is its defensive stone walls, constructed between the 12th and 17th centuries, which encircle the old town for almost 2 km. Explore the old town, which is entirely pedestrianised, and has five medieval fortresses and four city gates. Enter the old city through Pile Gate and you will find the Franciscan Monastery, Dominican Monastery and the Cathedral of the Assumption, as well as a number of fascinating museums.
It’s worth noting that Dubrovnik is very busy in Summer, specifically July and August, when visitors flock to the city and occasionally you will need to line up at the city gates to enter the old city. Most tourists visit during the day and then leave via cruise ships in the evening, so at night, the city takes on a very different quality. The best time to walk along Stradun, the main street, is after sunset.
For incredible views, take the cable car to Srdj, a 400-metre-high hill overlooking Dubrovnik, with a bar with panoramic views at the top. Dubrovnik is also a beautiful sight from the water, with sea kayaking tours starting from Pile Gate and sunset cruises making their way around the bay. Beaches are another major Dubrovnik attraction, so catch a boat to the Island of Lokrum, a popular swimming spot.
Dubrovnik has by far the most varied and multicultural range of restaurants in Croatia - you can find plenty of traditional Croatian meat, seafood and pasta dishes, but also everything from sushi to tapas. As with the rest of Croatia, there are cafes everywhere where you can while away the hours with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Make sure you check out the city’s cliff bars, Buza 1 and Buza 2 - both have spectacular views and a great atmosphere.
