Hiring a car in the USA
With the exception of a few cities, cars are the main way to travel around in the United States. While New York, Chicago, and Boston offer great public transportation, the vast majority of American cities do not offer reliable public transport options. Many of the most beautiful spots in the United States aren’t even accessible by public transport. To get the true American experience, you should see the cities but also experience the national parks and nature of the country as well. When you rent a car in the USA, you’re giving yourself the freedom to explore wherever you would like at your own pace.
Things to know before hiring a car in the USA
While a couple of states allow people to hire a car from the age of 18, the national age to rent a car in the USA is 21. For visitors between the ages of 21 and 25, an extra fee is added on top of the car hire cost. Travellers over the age of 26 can score some great prices on car hire in the USA.
While driving in the United States, it’s important to follow the local road rules. Americans drive on the right side of the road. When you are used to driving on the opposite side, turning at intersections and going through roundabouts can feel unnatural and confusing at first, so be sure to pay close attention.
Your Australian driving license is absolutely fine to use in the United States, as long as it will be valid for the duration of your holiday. It’s a good idea to carry your passport with you as well while driving a cheap car rental in the USA as an extra form of identification.
It’s important to note that in case you are pulled over while driving, do not get out of the car. The police officer will come to you. Also keep in mind that the United States calculates speeds as miles per hour rather than kilometres per hour. Speed limit signs are posted in mph.
What to do when hiring a car in the USA
All over the United States, you’ll find some of the most incredible driving routes and destinations to visit with a hire car. On the west coast, you’ll find the Pacific Coast Highway. While the highway stretches all the way from the Mexican border in the south to the Canadian border in the north, the most popular section is between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Take a few days to explore the amazing spots between these two cities, including Malibu, Santa Barbara, Big Sur, Monterey, and Santa Cruz. The PCH runs along the Pacific Ocean, offering some incredible views throughout the drive.
Another beautiful region to explore with a car rental in the USA is the Southwest, including Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. Throughout this part of the country, you can drive through vast deserts and witness some of the USA’s most beautiful nature. Some can’t-miss places in the Southwest include the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, and Arches National Park. The closest major city to these national parks is Las Vegas, so if you’ve booked a holiday to Vegas, be sure to rent a car and experience the natural (and just as glamorous) side to the region as well.
If you’ll be visiting the Northeast of the USA in autumn, the cities are nice, but the countryside is truly breathtaking. If you are visiting Nork York or Boston, rent a car for a few days to explore upstate New York and New England. The area has some beautiful mountains and national parks that come alive with brightly coloured foliage in autumn.
