At home, in the Forbidden City
Beijing is Air China’s headquarters and main international hub. It also happens to be one of the world’s greatest cities; vast in every respect – in area, in population and historic significance. World Heritage sites jostle for elbow room amidst a wildly energetic flow of humanity. While Beijing never stops, quiet eddies do exist where visitors can step back in time and contemplate the majesty of the Imperial tombs, the palaces and temples, or that iconic landmark, the Great Wall.
Beijing Capital International Airport is located about 26km northeast of Beijing. The airport comprises three terminals. Air China and the Star Alliance airlines operate out of Terminal 3, completed in time for the 2008 Olympics and the largest terminal in the world. This building is an architectural masterpiece, elegantly combining cultural relevance with form and function.
Transport to and from the city is very straightforward. An express subway serves the airport from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2, carrying passengers to the airport in twenty minutes from the city centre. There are nine different shuttle bus routes connecting the airport to various locations in downtown Beijing. The shuttle bus from downtown Beijing stops at Terminals 3, 2 and 1 in turn. Shuttle bus routes 3, 4 and 5 travel in both directions and leave every 15 minutes while the other lines all leave at 30 minute intervals. Tickets are purchased before travel from the airport or any of the downtown stops.
